because nobody else is seeing what he's seeing or thinking what he's thinking. even Takagi and Megure are just 'oh, first guy dies smoking in bed. then a crazy old lady jumps out the window on her own.' they're not thinking critically or analytically like cops are supposed to.

plus, once more Kogoro's idiocy seems to be infectious.

also, Shin is probably damned pissed off there's been two deaths right in front of him, in the same evening! if i recall correctly this is only the SECOND time there's been more than one murder in front of Shin. the other one was the Osaka case with Heiji about the history buff group who was role-playing at being Warring States warlords. one guy and one lady seemingly lit themselves on fire etc.

Or in the most typical type, Kogoro's car breaks down and they stay the night near a local's house, who is usually rich. Murder.
